THE SCROLLS OF HONOUR

The following pages have been designed to acknowledge the achievements of those Athletes who have been chosen to represent their Island at the Commonwealth Games, which is the highest level of International competition that is open to the Islands in which they can enter a multi-sports representative team.

Originally, Commonwealth Games Organising Committees produced an Honours Table, which included all competitors who had achieved 10th place in their respective event. Over a period, such tables have been reduced, which now only show the top 6 places. Unfortunately, this does little to reflect the achievements of athletes from small Commonwealth Games Associations when set against those from teams of the larger nations.

Therefore, the following pages not only record the Island’s Medallists, but also those who have achieved up to 10th place or the quarter finals in their particular discipline and for Aquatics, a place in the ’B’ finals or its equivalent. The increasing number of competitors now featuring in the lists, is an indication of the investment being made in sport by our government, which helps to fund competitors to attend both National and International competitions outside of the Island.

In addition, the name of every team member selected to represent their Island have been recorded, as each has successfully achieved the high standards set by their respective sports and who have demonstrated that from a population of some 64,000 inhabitants, the Islands have produced competitors with both the skill and ability to compete against the best in the Commonwealth and the people of the Bailiwick of Guernsey are justly proud of all of them and are each worthy of the honour of being included on the scroll.
